1. How does Joe’s invention work wonders for the people?

Joe’s invention would work wonders for the people by able to work twenty times the work in half the time. The machine unlike the traditional wheel, is able to work several spindles at once, producing a hundred threads instead of one. This would mean extra money and more leisure. Since many hands are not required children would be free from the hard work. Thus the possibility of the machine is wondrous. But the folk think that the new machine will take their bread.

The inmates of Anandwan are the self inspired, self moved, self motivated people who have learned to love life with devotion, dedication and determination. They are so positive in their outlook that instead of being sad and depressed over their illness, they go about the chores of Anandwan- a forest of bliss with great joy. As they work together, they believe in the ideal that charity destroys and work builds and are in turn completely self reliant.

According to baba if all are willing to listen to the prompting of their conscience, they would be blessed with inner strength to build an Anandwan on their own.

3.What according to the writer, is lacking in the American system of education?

While the writer agrees with Ho in his argument that the American system of education had ample opportunities for creativity,She refuses to accept Ho’s argument that it is the best. The writer feels that the students would have a better sense of orientation if they studied world maps and knew where their country is located and where other countries, which they hear about everyday, are in respect to their country. If this is in the field of geography, in history too by memorizing the names, places and facts students have material that enables them to think, criticize, evaluate and draw conclusions about social and economic conditions. Even in the field of science, students know why things happened the way they did only when they have enough scientific background to understand and interpret the results of the experiments.

2 (c) Answer any two in about 80 words each                 2*5=10

1.   The mothers got busier as harvest time drew near, what effect did this have on the children?

The busier the mothers were, the more neglected the children were. The mothers, unable to take their children to the fields at harvest time, leave them behind at home. They leave the children behind, bundled very tight, hoping that the children would come to no harm. The mental anxiety of the mothers would have been unbearable. But they have no alternative. The only relief lies in their faith in God. The mothers send their prayers to God seeking the safety of their children.

The children wriggle out anyway and they also manage to crawl out into the open. They are out of the safety of the bundle and are exposed to the sun and the heat. They also try to walk on the hard stubble without any protection for the feet. But fortunately they came to no harm, instead they started learning to be self reliant.

2.   Who does the speaker in the poem “I am not that woman” complain against? Why?

The speaker complains against all those who have gone against the freedom and dignity of women. They could be close family members like the parents who have tried to get rid of a burden by marrying her off. It could be the husband who has imprisoned her within the four walls of the house and gone out into the open world to be happy and free. There are other oppressors who violate a woman’s dignity and use them as commodities. There are also those exploiters who have the mental darkness of warped customs and traditions.

What should be noticed in the course of the poem is the bitter truth that in all the situations, the exploited is always the woman. When it comes to the oppressor the pronoun used is ‘you’. Not even once the speaker uses the masculine gender. The tragic implication is that in the patriarchal society woman could be getting exploited by not only men but also by women.

3.   pickout the words and expressions which are related to the sea and voyage. How does the poet use them in clarifying true love?

Shakespeare uses marine register in the second quatrain of the sonnet to explicate his ideas of the true love. By comparing love to a beacon and a star, he highlights two different situations in a voyage. The first one is when there is sea turbulence, the second is when the sea or any other vessel is lost. The beacon and the star act as guiding force. The comparison suggests that there can be disturbances and dilemmas in the lives of lovers.  But if the love is true it wavers not and remains steadfast like the ever fixed mark. When the lovers are lost in the sea of life, the star helps them out just as the star helps continues to help all the lost ships. Thus by bring the jargon wards off the sea. The poet effectively introduced the idea of constancy and change.
